Uncovering
Grammar |
| All teachers
have taught grammar that their students have failed to learn. This
session intends to challenge the traditional view of grammar as a
“thing” to be learned, suggesting that it is a “process
that emerges”. It also re-examines traditional approaches to
teaching grammar and fosters students’ uncovering it. |

students can keep a record of their own achievements. |

Teaching: Tips & Strategies |

Lexis
and Meaning: Why Can We Say "Blond Hair" but We Cannot
Say " Blond Car" ? |
| ‘When
I first started teaching English, we were encouraged to think of grammar
as the bones of the language and vocabulary as the flesh. The "skeleton"
image has now been confined to the proverbial cupboard and the current
view is language consists of prefabricated "chunks" of lexis.
The key feature to the formation of these chunks is "collocation"...’
Jimmie Hill in Collocational Competence, ETP Issue 11, 1999. In this
workshop we shall be analysing what we mean by "chunks”
of lexis and "collocation" and how looking at language from
this angle rather than thinking of lexis as isolated words can help
both the teaching and the learning process. |

we live in forces to go along constant changes. The rolling forces

from an ethical stance. |

Creativity:
Painting with All the Colours of the Wind |
| In the name
of innovation, authenticity and…creativity, we are often bombarded
with all kinds of language activities that appeal to our various senses,
various intelligences, various selves, various brains (?!) and that
are all, obviously, suitable for the largest of our “large,
mixed ability classes”. We rehearse them in countless professional
development courses and find them easy and great fun to do (only we
sometimes forget we are the “teachers”), but how many
of these magic recipes are really conductive to developing the linguistic
and/or communicative competence of our students? This talk will offer
a framework for the analysis of language activities for students at
and above the elementary level. |

Myths - How We Truly Store and Recall Learning |

store and retrieve data and which strategies aid memory. Through quizzes,
humour, relevant music, role-play and practical examples, we will
reveal the truth behind five memory myths that may revolutionize the
way we teach. Come and learn how to apply what we now know about memory
processes to your own life and optimize its effectiveness. |
The
Curriculum, a Map to Bridge the Gap |
| “Apocalypse
or Golden Age, the choice is ours". The world is changing four
times faster than our schools, according to research. Which curriculum
can take us to the changing and demanding world that is lurking round
the corner? Mission impossible? Through visuals, storytelling, jokes
and practical tips we will approach the five cornerstones: Brain Research,
the I.T.I. Model, Multiple Intelligences, VAK attack and Lifeskills. |

teachers, each of us has wondered at one point or other why our intermediate

and discussing some practical applications |

Charge of Our Professional Development |

Teaching
English in Technical Schools isn't Difficult, Let's Try Together! |
| When the
school year begins, we are faced with the challenge to plan activities
for different groups of students with different levels and interests.
But when we have to teach English for commercial purposes, or other technical areas such as computing, electricity
or construction, we have to be very creative and, needless to say,
careful when selecting suitable material. Let's work together with
some practical examples that can be easily used in our Technical Schools. |
